The B.F.A. in photography program is dedicated to photographers and artists, students and scholars, creating and interpreting the world of the visual image. Photography students have the opportunity to pursue fine art, fashion, landscape, still life, portraiture, photojournalism and other specialized topics.

At Point Park University, class sizes are small, which allows students to actively engage with their instructors and classmates. Courses revolve around student-centered learning, encouraging students to:

  • develop bodies of work;
  • build technical skills; and 
  • engage in conversations that help them understand their work in relation to the images that shape our contemporary culture.

Photography students are grounded in the creative and technological skills of the medium and will gain an understanding of the professional world through classes, internships and networking opportunities.

Students will learn how to process in black and white and color darkrooms, light a studio, and create, edit and print using digital materials. Processes and techniques covered include:

  • Business and marketing
  • Alternative processes
  • Interpretive writing
  • Historical and theoretical issues
  • 35mm, medium format and 4x5 film camera
  • Digital capture and post-production
  • Web design
  • Gallery and portfolio presentation

The B.F.A. program is constantly redefining the medium of photography. Focusing on both practice and theory, students will gain a broad definition of photography as a lens-based medium open to an endless variety of expressive means.

Photography as a Career

The B.F.A. in photography prepares students to:

  • Launch careers as professional artists
  • Work creatively in commercial advertising and portrait studios
  • Produce compelling work as photojournalists, commercial, editorial and/or fine art photographers
  • Apply expertise in museums and galleries and create artwork for public exhibition
  • Combine knowledge of image-making with another field
  • Write as a professional interpreter and critic
  • Engage in graduate studies in fine art programs

Graduates are well-positioned to join a network of alumni who are actively working with local and national media outlets, businesses and organizations, as well as pursuing post-graduate study.
